OFFICIALS - SUB-STATE OFFICIATING INVITATIONS
OFFICIALS: On Sunday, October 14 @ 11:20 AM, invitations were extended to 119 officials to officiate at a sub-state tournament. Your cooperation in checking Arbiter to confirm an assignment is appreciated. Once we have confirmation from all officials (please respond by October 15), tournament managers will be notified and instructed to communicate with the officials assigned to their tournament (traveling assignments, tournament location, start time, etc.). It is important that officials who received an invitation from Arbiter last week join the KSHSAA account in order to possibly receive a postseason assignment.

INVITATIONS TO OFFICIATE A STATE TOURNAMENT
On Tuesday, October 16, 36 registered volleyball officials will receive an email via Arbiter Sports to officiate Pool Play at one of 6 state volleyball tournaments on Friday, October 26. 24 of those officials will also receive a second Arbiter email inviting them to officiate semi-final and final matches on Saturday, October 27. Your cooperation in providing an immediate response is appreciated. Tournament materials will be mailed to these 36 state officials on Friday, October19. This information will include driving assignments, directions to the tournament site, lodging for officials who live 75 miles from tournament site, the pre-tournament meeting agenda, pool play rotation of officials, etc.

ASSISTANT OFFICIALS NEEDED
This year there were 814 registered volleyball officials. 167 have been identified to officiate at a regional and/or sub-state tournament and of that number, 36 will be selected to officiate at a state tournament. All remaining registered officials are eligible to serve as a tournament line judge. If interested, please contact a tournament manager. See Volleyball Manual, pg. 29 for state contact info.

EVERY MATCH IMPORTANT!
Officials - we must always remember that every match is important to the participants and deserves the best we have to offer. As we enter the last 2 weeks of the season, many high school girls will be playing their last volleyball match – perhaps forever. Give these matches the best you have to offer, always being professional as you carry out your responsibilities. REMEMBER: THE MOST IMPORTANT MATCH IS THE ONE YOU ARE WORKING!

TOURNAMENT ROLES
Tournament managers are in charge of conducting the tournament. Some of their many duties include: Determining tournament format, identifying and securing all workers with the exception of the primary officials, setting up the facility for the tournament, arranging for introductions & national anthem, etc. The primary officials per match (R1 and R2) conduct the volleyball match per the NFHS rule book. It is especially important during the pre-match time period to review the roles with the secondary officials to assure they know the duties of their job. If you have a concern with the competency of one of these important officials, please inform the tournament manager immediately!
SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENTS ARE THE PRODUCT OF TEAMWORK. WE DON’T WORK FOR EACH OTHER; WE WORK WITH EACH OTHER.

TOURNAMENT PREP
Regional and Sub-state officials and host schools are encouraged to prepare for their important role on October16 and 20. Officials are encouraged to: Review the rule book and situations/contents in the case book, re-read past KSHSAA weekly newsletters, review tournament content in the KSHSAA volleyball manual and re-read your notes from the area supervisor meetings. Officials and tournament managers are to be reminded of the following:

  1. HOME TEAM: The team on the top of each bracket is the home team and shall be listed as such on the score sheet and on the scoreboard. (That may mean that the host school will actually be the visitor during some matches.)
  2. LATE ARRIVAL: If for some reason, a team arrives at the tournament late, consult pg. 15 of the KSHSAA Volleyball Manual for the correct procedure.
  3. TIME ON COURT: Teams playing the first match of the tournament may be on the court 40 minutes prior to the match for stretching and agility work only. Teams may not have balls on the court until 20 minutes before the match.
  4. VOLLEYBALLS: All post-season host schools have received two Baden Perfection VX5EC-220 volleyballs for use during the tournaments (blue, gray and white). Please check to be sure that the correct balls are being used.
  5. WARM-UP: The warm-up procedure for KSHSAA postseason tournaments is listed on pg. 19 of the KSHSAA Volleyball Manual. All warm-ups in regional and sub-state tournaments are 20 minutes (3-7-7-3), with the possible exception of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round matches at sub-state. If BOTH coaches agree, you may use the 10 minute (4-4-2) warm-up for those matches. If they don't both agree, you go with the 20 minutes. This is not the decision of the host management!
  6. ADJACENT COURT: An adjacent court may not be used for warm-up or stretching by anyone during tournament competition. (So if one court finishes before another court, the warm-up for the next match may not begin until both courts have finished their matches. The manual says that matches in the same round will start at the same time.)
  7. INTRODUCTIONS: Postseason tournaments should include the introduction of players and coaches and the playing of our National Anthem. It will help put the coaches and players at ease if you remind them of the procedure that will be followed. You can find the correct procedures on pg. 24 and 27 of the KSHSAA Volleyball Manual.
  8. ROSTER: Each team may only suit up and have 12 players on the roster for KSHSAA postseason tournaments. No additions can be added once a tournament begins. Just as the school teams are preparing to do their best on the 16th and 20th, officials are expected to do the same!

CONGRATULATIONS & GOOD LUCK TO ALL POSTSEASON OFFICIALS AND TEAMS!
